We live in the era of connected devices that are consumed for various reasons, such as communication, gaming, health and fitness, music, video, etc. One could ask that, how did we get here? What is the path of evolution? What were the reasons that prompted or motivated us to adopt technology in our daily lives. Someone who has lived through technology can relate its evolution with the natural progression of consumer demand to bringing constant change in the quality of life style.

I will take a quick moment and retrospectively analyze this tech journey. So we are back in the early 80s when DOS operating system was first introduced for IBM PC. That led to a phenomenal shift in the computing world, where computing power drifted from bulky mainframes and brought into homes, offices, bank, etc. in form of personal computers (PC). As market started seeing potential in the possibilities of Personal Computers, consumers started to adopt the new phenomenon. As the rest is history - as technology became matured, it readily entered in to our daily lives. There were multiple factors that significantly contributed in shaping up that era and resulted in technology growth by leaps and bounds. Not only it was the advancement in the fields of Physics, Mathematics and System Engineering that led to the success, end-users from different background and profession, were also one of the major contributors in driving this. Both mental and physical capacities were complemented by the use of technology, including but not limited to, Word processors, CAD/CAM, Math learning tools, and so on.

In late 80s, and mid 90s the computer World had become more sophisticated, owing to the bright minds who constantly pushed the boundaries of technology. Let us just take one simple example of Internet, how it started and how it evolved into a giant amalgamation of networks, computers and operating systems. No one could have comprehended the true potential of Internet back then. In the beginning, only privileged class was accessing the global network, trying to judge its value proposition. No one new the potential it was hiding under and how that could one day, will change the lives of millions forever. As corporate, offices, hospitals and homes, became more familiar with values of network systems, the demand for connectivity grew more and more. Prices dropped and affordability increased, and more and more people started adopting this technology drive. So much so that for their day-to-day activities, global connectivity became inevitable. This led to formation of hundreds and thousands of companies started doing business, either directly or indirectly related to Internet.

At the turn of the century, almost 400 million were already using Internet. This called for couple of key smart moves to coupe with the demand of power, storage and computing. Some of the notable ones being miniaturization technology, that led to the production of large scale hard disks and memories and processors. With more computing power in hand, businesses like software manufacturers, cell phone, gadgets and computer makers, invented cool things and raised the technology bar even higher.

As we entered in to 21st century, we saw things like Software As-A Service (SaaS), mobility, smart phones, visual arts, advancement in gaming and animation, and so on. Later, in the year 2007, a notable disruptive technology was surfaced, which changed the entire gamut of mobile phones forever. That was iPhone! Although smart phones had been in the market, yet no one realized the usage of a mobile phone, the way Apple thought it through and mastered it. iPhone was an instant success, not only because it was a slick new gadget, but market also wanted to see some change, something that can outgrow a phone into a complete multipurpose personal device. Since then, a totally new marketplace, called the smart phone users, has emerged. It prompted governing bodies to institutionalize codes and procedures, to ensure successful implementation of standards and governing principles.

So here we are in the year 2015 where millions have already been addicted to the digital life-style. We are talking about smart homes, energy efficient connected cars, augmented reality, driver-less cars and besides all this, a smart healthcare system. Where patients can connect with doctors from the convenience of their homes, leading to minimized traveling, improved quality and time savings. It is estimated by the industry leaders, that by 2020 fifty (50) billion devices and objects will be connected to the Internet.

Lastly, lets take a quick peek at mHealth. This technology has already shown signs of being a disruptive phenomenon in the industry. Although it is in it's infancy, yet it is showing strong prospects of becoming a standard way for providing (and receiving) healthcare, in a very near future. The pace with which our world is getting mobile centric, mobile healthcare is definitely going to be an important player in defining the future of healthcare practices all over the World.
